Melbourne-based couple Tanya and Vito hit the jackpot according to The Block architect Julian Brenchley when they were able to choose House #3 after coming in last place for the House Decider Challenge at the start of the series. Said Julian of the couple’s good fortune, “Of all the houses on this year’s Block, Tanya and Vito were given the keys to the kingdom with this mid-century modern facade”.

Tanya and Vito who had no prior renovation experience, but have built several family homes, were excited when they discovered that COLORBOND® steel was once again a sponsor of the series. They knew early on that they wanted to preserve and enhance the mid-century modern design of the house – balancing colourful Bauhaus shapes with a soft neutral palette to attract as many buyers as they could with their three-bedroom home. Said Tanya, “We opted for quality over quantity with our rooms, so with only three-bedrooms, our house is likely to appeal to smaller families or empty nesters. The main living spaces, and each room are beautifully spacious and unique.”

The couple met with COLORBOND® steel Colour and Design Consultant, Ali Fenton to discuss colour options for their unique roof layout, which includes a low-pitched skillion roof that rises above the original, asymmetrical gable across the length of the façade. Said Tanya of the meeting, “Ali was an absolute gem – she was so helpful and seeing the COLORBOND® steel swatches in a flatlay made it easy to visualise the overall look of the outside of our home. I love the COLORBOND® steel range too, so it was difficult to choose!”.

They eventually decided on COLORBOND® steel Matt in the popular colour of Shale Grey™ – confident this would be the perfect pale neutral to create a sense of softness, and would lift against the deep darks and brighter, colourful collection of tones below. “Our house is modern mid-century, so it’s packed full of character and personality. We really wanted to honour the mid-century facade but give it a modern fun look that’s also very practical and unique,” said Tanya.

This theme of balancing neutral tones, darker shades, and pops of mid-century inspired colour has been continued throughout the house for a seamless outside to inside transition. The house design includes raked ceilings, which combined with the classic 1950’s roof style opens up the north side of the home, letting light flood into the kitchen, dining and living spaces through the striking new wall of black-framed windows.

The couple has also been praised for how they have incorporated mid-century modern design elements into their home. Says Julian of the couple’s delivery, “They’re colourful people so we have a colourful response, but it doesn’t end with the choice of their front door colour or garage door. The front door is a colour statement by itself, but then you open that door and you’re presented with this extraordinary sunken lounge in the living room. They’ve looked at the whole building and the character of it pervades and oozes throughout.”

In week 9, the couple also made a last-minute decision to clad three of the exterior walls around their pool area in COLORBOND® steel Matt in the colour Basalt®. This choice allowed the deep black industrial-style frames of the window wall and feature corner window to become hero elements against the understated, neutral, dark grey. Ali was excited for this development and praised the couple’s choice of material and colour – “The cladding wraps around the rear of the home, and pairs with the warm, timber decking to frame the pool and strengthen the sensation of an outdoor room. The warm tone of the decking then connects with the playful, softer pastel shades of the interior finishes within the home, creating visual flow from outside to in.”
